the seven of pentacles, and a line from Wendy Ortiz’s Hollywood Notebook: “In the course of five hours the ray of light spoke of the 17 seconds it takes for thoughts to become an emotion that will be transmitted to the Universe; reincarnation; the twelve archetypes we live out in this life (four of which are not chosen by us, but distributed randomly); everything as composed of vibrations; the psychic Sylvia Browne; Carl Jung; ‘The Forum’ where one might learn what events, at the age of five, might have triggered the sentence we've lived under and how to combat this sentence, which can be potentially destructive; that someone is out there already writing the screenplay you want to write so you better get on it; that women fall in love with their ears while men fall in love with their eyes; and that writing from the ego is not going to produce the most passionate, heartfelt writing.”

The house plant is saying: I’VE GOT TO BE ME. The bicycle leaning against the wall is saying: NICE TO MEET ME. The rug is saying: YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. Having a self is not a human-exclusive experience. Being lonely probably is. Sometimes, if I’m struggling to feel gratitude, I imagine that everything in the room with me had to wake up at 5am and take a bus across town to get to my living room before I woke up.
the assignment
Take care of yourself in a way that somebody actually nice might take care of you.
writing prompt
Write down the sentence you have lived under. I mean your whole life, including all the moments you’ve seen yourself from above in the angled mirrors of the CVS.

Dear diary, I had a dream that I took my cat to work with me, but then I had to take him to his own special work lunch at a much fancier restaurant than the rest of us were going to. This morning, he’s acting the same way. x Sarah
