six of pentacles, and a line from Emily Segal’s Mercury Retrograde: “Beside the urgency, the major complicating factor was Seth’s imminent departure for a ten-day silent meditation retreat in Joshua Tree.”
the aleatory
Sixes misses. The coins fall to the hand that’s open. The rose stays. A rose has ways. Whatever you want, though! You can be a stupid suitcase on the side of Highway 62 where the sun has turned the street signs into surfboard flame letters. Got to go on that. This is a silent meditation: A tree. This is a silent meditation: A bee. Are you paying attention? Are you asking the man in the gas station how to put the straw in your cup when you already know how to do it? Money is stupid and nice, like the girl who braids everybody’s hair. You don’t have to be here for anybody. Toda Moda. Shoe City. The Starbucks where they don’t let you plug in your phone. Keep going if it makes sense. Money is in no one’s possession. It is always between things. That’s why it’s worth befriending.
the assignment
Get elegant with whatever you’re holding.
the writing prompt
Write a poem using only words that you can hold. (Like: “cat.” “Table.” “Empty yogurt container.” No “and” unless you have a statue of the word “and” in your house. etc. You could spell out “if” in the street with sticks, maybe.)
